Autumn Stream

acrylic, 24x18 in , palette knife
I really wanted to bring some falls colors into my paintings. I used three different reference photos ( plus some artistic license) Does it look a little disjointed? I will live with this for a bit and make the necessary changes. I also wanted make sure I kept the 'western landscape' theme and tried to do it without the mountains.

Misty Lake

acrylic 24in x24in. I struggled a lot with this one, trying to have a softer feel...it was a challenge. Trying to photograph my art is becoming increasingly challenging as well. Either that or I'm becoming very picky. In any event, I need to improve these skills as I'm losing a lot of sublties and color.

Moraine Mountains

A close-up of Moraine Lake mountains near Banff. Mostly done with a palette knife I'll have to re-take a photo of this one,,,it's too dark and washed out. Acrylic 30in x30in ( my new favorite size)

The Rose

Acryic on canvas 24x36
I stopped myself from over working this one as I really liked the feel I was achieving, and didn't want to ruin it. It took a lot of willpower to step away. These are not the colors I had intended. Please click on the image for full view to see the texture.

Porcelaine Equine Jewellry

Taking a small break from my painting to finish off some porcelain pieces for Christmas. If anyone is interested, I sell them for $49.95.Contact me if you would like to see them. ( 455-1236) Leighton Center , Studio Todorovic and the Galleria all sell my jewellry. Each piece is unique and fired in a kiln. They are accented with real crystals and the necklaces are done with ultra black swede and average 15-18 inches. It's not the best photograph...I will need to get some models...but you can gauge the size by the quarter. ( click on photo for a much larger than life view)

The Process

Each piece is created for individual expression, uniquely sculptured to reflect the inherent qualities of the porcelain clay. Hand built through various uses of slab and coil, each piece is kiln fired at least twice to 2200 degrees F, for strong durability. Texturing techniques include various materials such as lace, stamps, carving tools and handmade moulds. Each piece is fired with black stain and black gloss glaze. Accents may include Swarovski crystals.

Mountain Shade

Acrylic, 14 x14 $375
Rather than the palette knife this effect was achieved by laying down the texture first...somewhat similar to David Langevin's work, although I don't use as many transparent layers as he does. I do love the textural lines that are produced.

Redwood Meadows

Attempted to plein air paint at beautiful Redwood Meadows near Bragg creek with Kathryn Manry, Sharon Lynn Williams and Karin Heuhold. Didn't stay long though, it was pretty windy. I finished these two off at home so I guess they are only 3/4 plein air painted. This second one I was a little looser and it was finished very quickly...45 min.

Falls at Lake O'Hara

Acrylic on canvas, 24x36 $1200

This is my first painting after my wonderfull experience at Gabriola. I did try and use some of the information I gained with the use of transparent and single pigment colors. I like the way this turned out.

More from Gabriola

From the Top:
Brian Atyeo painting at Full Moon farm with the view of Mt Baker. I had never see him paint before so I was quite pleasantly surprized with the outcome of this painting.
Everyone in my group was excited for Steven Quiller, even thought he majoritiy of us were acrylic painters. He's a wonderfull watercolorist
Steven and the ladies on the rocks. This was the last day of painting and I would have liked to have seen more of and talked to Gaye Adams, and especially Liz Wiltzen & Sarah Kidner who are also from Alberta, but I never got the chance.

From the Top:
Robert Genn Demo...he was incredible! and fast...he painted 4 paintings in one afternoon. it was a little scary watching him get in and out of his easel/chair contraption he built. I bought his book
Suzanne's afternoon workshop...she is chalk full of positive energy and such a nice person. She made me realize I needed to sketch more.
My paintings I had done during the week and was lucky enough to have sold them all.I may be getting the knack of this 'Plein Air' stuff after all.
Brent Heighton ...one of my favorite all time impressionist painters! I was kinda awestruck. I wish I could have watched him paint more! I would love to paint like him.
...More tomorrow

Gabriola Island Painting Extravaganza

Wow! Loved it. What an amazing experience. To have all these incredible artists in one room! Information overload! A few minor bumps along the way but all and all a totally enjoyable week. Kathryn Manry sums it up quite nicely

"Gabriola Island is the northernmost of the southern group of Gulf Islands east of Vancouver Island. In September, it was the site of a week long gathering of artists for a Federation outdoor painting event. The 88 participants came together at The Haven, a facility which provided a waterfront setting for living, dining, and generally hanging out… and from there they dispersed daily to various painting sites around the island to work “en plein aire” and explore their responses to the rich visual opportunities each location offered.

There were four principal “instructors” – artists who rotated through smaller groups of 22 participants each day. They conducted sessions according to their own focus and techniques at different sites. David Langevin, Stephen Quiller, Suzanne Northcott and Brian Atyeo were the “stars” who served in these rolls. In addition to these principal presenters, other artists were invited to attend, to paint together with the groups at the various sites, and to participate in the evening events. These artists included Janice Robertson, Kiff Holland, Brent Heighton, Alan Wylie, Gaye Adams, Liz Wiltzen, Rick McDiarmid, Sarah Kidner, Jean Pederson, and Donna Baspaly. Robert Genn was a special guest for one evening session. This collection of talent made for a rich and heady environment."

I have hundreds of photos to share but obviously can only submit a few. More tomorrow :)
