Between The Trees

Acrylic on canvas, 20x20

I wish I could say I was here, and took this picture, but I was not. The photographer, Alex Borsuk, lives in Manitoba and used to do a lot of hiking in the mountains. He has graciously given me permission to use his photos as inspiration and reference for my paintings.

Rocky Mountain Memories

acrylic on canvas, 2ft x 4 ft

I wanted to create another waterfall similar to my Athabasca Power, but I wanted it larger and a different composition. Because I didn't use a reference I put the word 'memories' in the title but it's still inspired by Jasper National Park water falls. I got a little messy with this one...brushes, palette knife and lots of blue shop towels to scrump with.

Wildflower Pond

acrylic 11x14

I was out taking pictures and looking for plein air spots and was amazed by all the wild flowers out in bloom now. I just love the pink Alberta Rose. This was an old painted that I painted over...basically keep the same composition but added mountains, totally changed all the colors and added more trees and flowers. A little too 'postcardy' and commercial perhaps?

Different Strokes Cowboy

acrylic on gessobord 8x12

My take on Karin Jurick's 'Different Strokes for Different Folks' challenge. It seemed fitting, seeing as I live in Calgary and we just wrapped up the stampede, that I make him into a cowboy. Big challenge deciding on colors.

Mountain Stream

acrylic 2ft x3ft

I've been working and reworking this for 2 days now...it's also larger than a daily painting. I started with a photo but ended up discarding it as I totally strayed. The colors are different the composition is different...the whole mood is different. But that's good . I don't want to become dependent on photos for my art. I'll probably still rework this one but I need to observe it for a few days.

My stampede collection all sold but one and my art auction piece sold for twice the amount listed! Im so pleased. I will try for a booth ( selling about 30+ paintings) next year, so I must paint more large textural landscapes and some impressionistic western wildlife as well. I have until January to submit 8 images for jury. I must start now so I can choose the best of them.

Mountain Lit

acrylic 8x10

A smaller painting again inspired by my camping trip on Tunnel mountain. The light on the trees and the mountains seemed to change every minute and the colors....it was wonderfull to see. I don't get out camping much...maybe twice in the last 10 years!

Calgary Stampede Western Showcase

No paintings finished yet. It's a very busy time for me at the moment. I'm going to the 'Stir-up' tonight at the Calgary Stampede where I have 5 of my paintings are on display at the art gallery and art auction. Tonight is a pre-viewing for buyers and collectors and 80% of the sales are done at this time. Over 2 thousand people attended last year. This is my first time participating and saying I'm excited is an understatement!I also have a opening at Art Central on Thurs where many of my paintings are featured and an opening in Okotoks on Friday for the Federation Of Canadian Artists, where I have 3 paintings juried in. The live art auction is on the 9th and having never been to one, I'm sooooo looking forward to that. You can checkout all the artists and such here http://www.westernshowcase.com/ Wish me luck and I promise....more paintings to come
