Behind The Camp,Tunnel Mountain, Banff

acrylic on canvas 9x12
SOLD
Well I'm back from camping. I went with family and friends who are not interested in art so I only managed one two hour session. This is my very first plein air painting. I went into a meadow behind our camp site at Tunnel Mountain, Banff. It was a good experience except for the wind and realizing how ill-equipped I am to do this. Being an acrylic painter I had to carry soooo much stuff! I now know I need to invest in a plein air easel with tray and some sort of cart with wheels....need to sell a few more paintings first. All in all it was fun ( even making bear calls to let them know I'm here) and I would love to do it again...either alone or with some art people.
Started this with a brush but switched to my palette knife.

Fresh Cherries

acrylic on board 8x10

Went to Millarville to checkout the farmers market. We heard it was one of the biggest around with over 170 vendors. It was a nice scenic drive and we bought cherries and strawberries. One thing about this daily painting venture is, I'm painting things I would normally not paint...like fruit and other still lifes.

The Calm Before

acrylic on hardboard 8x10

Small palette knife painting.Didn't have a reference photo, just out of my head but I've seen many views like this, especially when you're in your car and travelling too fast for a photo or you forgot to bring a camera. I'm trying real hard now to bring my camera everywhere with me.

Yewande & Zuri, Calgary Zoo

acrylic 8x10

I went to the Calgary zoo the other day and couldn't help but wonder at these two. Yewande was born on May 15/2008. It was a much celebrated event as in 2007, three female gorillas died from illness at the Zoo. In August 2006, a newborn was lost after the dominant female in the group claimed the baby as her own from the birth mother, Zuri, and wouldn't let her go.

Spring Beginnings in Ingelwood

acrylic 10x20

Loved the tree in front of the Swans Pub, with it's bare branches. The duck wasn't out side yet so I added him in ( but I forgot about his reflection in the window ...not that noticeable I think?) It took me longer to paint this than I wanted, and it's also tighter than I would have liked...I need to use more paint. Oh well, on to the next one. I will do more of these street scenes as I want to include them in the Swirl gallery for July as the theme is 'Calgary summer fun'

Ice Geese

acrylic, 8x10

I just love these birds and I don't know why I haven't painted them before. I expect I'll paint more and I love to sit and watch them. I tried to stay loose but with acrylics ( even 'open') it's difficult to loose edges and remain fluid....but I'm working on it!

Eat Your Vegies ( different strokes)

This is my first time participating in Karin Jurick's 'Different strokes for different folks' and I must say it won't be my last. Trail Ride

'Trail Ride At Leighton'
acrylic on canvas
30 in x40 in

Well, worked on it some more and decided to go with texture and palette knife work...I may work on a smaller version without the texture to soften it up more.I still need to work on the fine tuning somemore, but I need to live with it for a bit.

Leighton centre

During a recent trip to Leighton Center, I took this photo. I thought it would make a great painting. Leighton Center was once home to Alberta artist A.C Leighton and his wife Barbara. It was bequeathed to cultivate an appreciation of art through it's assets. The art center with breathtaking views has become a well known gallery/museum showcasing a variety of exhibitions for Alberta artists. You can find more info at http://leightoncentre.org
This photo was taken during the 'clothesline' event in which about 70 artists hung small artwork ( encased in plastic)clothes lines for sale. The event had chuck wagon rides, food and beverages with many artists painting on the grounds.I have also included my preliminary painting which will take me more than a day to finish.I still haven't decided how textural I want to get.More tomorrow

Chizelled Gait

This is a small 8x10 painting that I reworked. The original was very stiff looking but I really liked the texture. So I loosened him up, bent his legs and added a couple new horses. It works much better now.

Foothills

This is a small 8"x10" acrylic...now that I've posted it I can see problems...for one, the mountains are too purple.

I will fix it later and re-post it. I didn't have a reference photo and I think I will do more of these foothill paintings in a larger format and use a palette knife.
