It Falls Within

I decided to finish this tiny 10 x10 painting which was used as a study for the larger painting 'What Falls Within'. These Tiny paintings are quick and fun and are sometimes much more dramatic and satisfying than their larger counterparts. They are looser and have more abstract quailities to them.

 Yep yet another waterfall.  Another take on 'The Light Within' but with a

smaller size, slightly different composition, and using a different method for the treatment of rocks. ( still using the palette knife)

Mountain Stream ( again)

I think this painting has been reworked more than any other I have. The older version is below. I didn't like the color of the water and the trees looked too....stringy for lack of a better word. I also added and redefined the rocks and softened the sky. I do like it better now...but I still have to live with it for a bit I think.

Forget-me -not Pond

This is still a work in progress as it is a little different then my previous work. I took the photo reference at Forget-Me-Not Pond just beyond Elbow falls. This was a little creek running along side and through it. What captured me was the blue in the trees, the reflection in the water and the light radiating through.

This is another re-vamped painting I had done a few years back. It was of Spirit Island, but I changed it so much, I had to change the title. Now that I have posted it I realize everything is gravitating to the centre including the horizon line...may have to revisit this one again.This painting was very difficult to photograph...it looks much better in real life!

Crowsnest pond

This painting was an unsuccessful plein air painting I had started in Crowsnest Pass, a while back. Acrylic paints, although very forgiving in a studio setting...give me nothing but grief in natures elements. I finished it in the studio.

The Valley Below

My daughter said the valley was too light and my husband said 'oh very nice I like the foggy misty valley'...neither are very artistically inclined but I'm thinking maybe there is something to it. It's funny how fresh eyes can see things you can't. I will have to revisit this painting.

What Falls Within

Back from holidays on the East Coast ( was staying in the Halifax harbor during hurricane Earl). Had a wonderful time and I came back full of inspiration. I managed to sneak this painting in before more company arrives and before heading out to the West Coast this time. I should be back in my studio painting everyday around the 23rd of September...can't wait!

Alberta Falls Study

A small 12 x12 study for a future painting. The reference is Alberta Falls which is actually not in Alberta. I think it would make a good larger painting.Palette knife.

 Finally got around to finishing this one. Had a hard time choosing colors. The horses were originally both white but it just wasn't working for me...this is much better with the textures I've used. Palette knife, dry brush and a rag.

Mountain Creek

Nice to be back painting again. Rocks are quite the challenge...must do more. This is a combination of palette knife and brush work.

Rawson Vista

Finally back painting again.It feels good.

I was in a little slump and I think it was because I was getting a little overwhelmed with outside influences and concerned  about the direction my art was going.( and wanting to do and try everything). After a great lunch with an artist I totally respect and look up to, I feel much better about myself. I have realized two things 1) just paint...anything 2) if it's not broke don't fix it

I've just begun to market myself and make my mark...any drastic change could damage what I've worked hard to achieve. Self doubt is normal and it will pass if you don't let consume you.

My new found enthusiasm for my painting unfortunately will be short lived as I'm about to start my travelling holidays but I will stay positive and paint when I can. I am passionate again :)

I Had A Dream

I had a dream last night, that I painted 87 paintings by November. Would be nice, but I've been in a little bit of a slump. Painters Block, if you will. I'm not too worried, I know it'll pass. Having company and travelling doesn't help. I'll be away for three weeks in August and one week in Sept. I have shops coming up in Oct, Nov, and deadlines for Dec...I'll have to get physically motivated real soon. It's not that I haven't been thinking about it...I want to try something new and I've been trying to formulate it in my mind.

On another note; I was thrilled to learn,my painting 'Sunwapta Roars', won the 'Collector Choice Award' at the Calgary Stampede Western Art Show.

Couple of Publications

I managed to snag the cover of the 'Old Strathcona' magazine, this summer. They used one of my older Whyte Ave paintings, which sold very well. I still have a few available at 'The Little Royal' on Whyte.

Also, this  is a page from the 'Southwest Art' magazine, July issue.

Opening Tonight!!!

Want something to do tonight? Our show opening is tonight from 7-9 pm, at the Resolution Gallery in Kensington, 233-10 st. Artists will be in attendance and we'll be serving wine and munchies. We have a door prize ( one of my paintings!) The show will run all month from July 1-31st. Hope to see some of you there!

Four Small Commissions

                                                                                                                                                               

My gallery had a request from a client for 4 small paintings based on 3 paintings I had already done.The ones I had done were larger ( one 3ft x3ft ) and all of them square. She wanted 9x12's. I thought it would be a real challenge...and I also don't like to paint similar 'copies' of my work. But, I was pleasantly surprized how smoothly it went...and fast too. She was absolutley thrilled with them!
